The best European Christmas markets for a weekend from the UK

Cologne, Vienna and Strasbourg are our top three for a first European Christmas market weekend. Cologne puts the cathedral at the heart of the visit, Vienna brings a grand City Hall setting, and Strasbourg offers a circuit of decorated old-town streets. Choose the setting you want to explore twice: once in daylight for the stalls, then after dark for the lights.

2. 2. Vienna

   Why go

   Start with the view. Vienna’s grand Rathaus rises behind the little wooden stalls, giving even your first, slightly distracted circuit a sense of occasion.    Why go

   Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt rewards a gentle approach. The red-and-white canvas roofs gather around Hauptmarkt and Rathausplatz, making a little city of wood and cloth in the middle of the old town. Walk one complete circuit before deciding where to stop: it is easier to notice a beautifully made decoration when you are not trying to choose lunch at the same time.

   Give Old Town Square your first evening. Arrive with enough daylight to get your bearings, then watch the Christmas tree and the surrounding buildings become the centre of attention.    Bruges rewards a slower Christmas outing. Begin on the Markt, where the Belfry makes an unmistakable meeting point, then let the little streets lead you towards Simon Stevinplein.
