How we choose and check our guides

The market

Begin at Residenzplatz and let the cathedral give your evening its bearings. Salzburg’s organiser confirms the Christkindlmarkt for 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, across Domplatz, Residenzplatz and parts of Kapitelplatz. It is a market to revisit rather than rush: make one daylight circuit to find the stalls that interest you, then return when the starry lighting changes the character of the squares.

The setting carries a long market history. Salzburg’s tourism office traces an earlier trading market on Cathedral Square to the late fifteenth century. Today’s Christkindlmarkt has operated in its present form since 1974. You need not turn the visit into a history lesson; simply leave a moment to look beyond the nearest stall roof and appreciate how closely the market and the surrounding Old Town fit together.

The organiser’s exhibitor directory makes browsing more personal. Follow a trail from wooden toys to soap, candles and Christmas decorations, asking the seller how each piece was made and how best to carry it home. A small purchase can be enough. There is also plenty to eat: named stands list gingerbread, pretzels, chestnuts and Austrian savoury specialities. Read the day’s menu rather than treating an online directory as a promise of every product.

Build in a warm indoor pause and keep the second day flexible. Music and customs are part of the programme, but choose an event from the dated organiser calendar before arranging your evening around it. Special opening hours apply over Christmas and New Year; the market, the shops and individual attractions need not share the same timetable. For another Austrian city break, compare our Vienna guide before you choose your weekend.

What a Brit needs to know

Travelling on a full British citizen passport? For these Schengen trips, check that it was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after you leave. Tourist visits across the Schengen area count towards a combined 90 days in any 180-day period.

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is in use. First registration can involve a photograph and fingerprints, so leave extra time at the border. There is no advance EES application or charge; for Eurostar from London, border checks take place before departure.

For a December 2026 trip, recheck ETIAS before you travel. At our 24 October 2026 check, official guidance had not announced a confirmed launch date and said no application was needed yet. A future requirement cannot be settled by your market booking date.

Take suitable travel insurance for the whole trip and a valid UK GHIC or eligible EHIC. The card covers medically necessary state healthcare on the same terms as local residents; it does not replace insurance or cover private treatment and getting you home.

Money and December essentials

Austria uses the euro (EUR). Check whether each stall accepts cards and ask about any refundable mug deposit before ordering. Salzburg is one hour ahead of the UK in December. Pack a European round two-pin adaptor, waterproof footwear with grip and warm layers; check the forecast rather than relying on snow for your visit.

Getting there from the UK

Getting here from the UK

Salzburg Airport’s published winter 2026/27 schedule lists British Airways from Gatwick year-round and Heathrow from 4 December, easyJet Gatwick from 4 December and Bristol from 5 December, plus Ryanair Stansted year-round and Manchester from 5 December. Some Jet2 routes begin only on 19 or 26 December: check your exact weekend and return flight before booking.

Munich is another gateway. Salzburg tourism describes rail connections from Munich Airport via München Ost taking about two and a half hours; use DB or ÖBB for a dated journey. Editorial whole-journey allowance: roughly 6–8 hours from a London home to Salzburg via a direct flight, allowing an hour to the airport, two hours before departure, about two hours flying and one to three hours for arrivals and the hotel. Munich adds an onward rail transfer.

Practical information

Getting there and back

Salzburg Airport lists bus 10 to the city centre (Monday–Saturday, around 15 minutes) and bus 2 to the main station (around 23 minutes). Check Salzburg Verkehr for the dated service and the final Old Town connection.

Salzburg tourism reports the Neutor closed to motor traffic from 14 September 2026 for several months. Use the current operator journey planner for diversions and your actual stop.

On the day

These are suggested ways to pace your visit, with time for an indoor rest and a return after dark. Check the official dated programme for actual events.

Before and after

Give the surrounding streets a daylight visit, then choose an indoor pause before the market lights. Museums, churches and other attractions have their own tickets, hours and access arrangements.

Accessibility

The Christkindlmarkt organiser describes its Domplatz and Residenzplatz site as barrier-free. That is useful event information, but it does not guarantee that every approach through the historic centre will suit everyone. Ask which route currently gives the easiest access from your arrival stop and whether temporary crowd controls change the way between the squares. Keep the market visit separate from any cathedral, tower or fortress visit: those attractions have their own entrances, tickets and accessibility information.
