Dresden’s Striezelmarkt fills the Altmarkt from 25 November to 24 December 2026. Give this square a generous part of your weekend rather than treating it as a quick stop between sights. Arrive with enough daylight to learn the layout, choose the stalls you want to revisit, and find somewhere for a warm break. The final day closes early, so Christmas Eve needs a different plan from a December evening.
The city traces the market’s story to 1434, and its association with Christmas baking is part of the pleasure of visiting. Start with a small taste rather than a shopping list: read the stall’s current menu, compare sizes and ask about ingredients. A slice of stollen or a warming drink gives you an excuse to pause. Gifts made from food need the same care as fragile ornaments when packing for home.
Look beyond the nearest stall roof. The great stepped pyramid, Christmas tree and walk-through candle arch make this a market with a distinctive silhouette. Traditional regional craft is another reason to take your time. Ask where an ornament was made and how to protect it in your luggage. The official craft information explains the regional traditions, but an individual stall’s current range is always best checked in person.
Leave part of the weekend for the old town around the square, with an indoor stop when the weather calls for it. Another circuit of the Altmarkt after dark may be more rewarding than fitting in another long journey. If you are planning a longer German trip, compare Dresden with our Berlin and Nuremberg guides, checking market dates and railway connections separately. This is a suggested rhythm for a break, not a timed event programme.

Travelling on a full British citizen passport? For these Schengen trips, check that it was issued less than ten years before arrival and expires at least three months after you leave. Tourist visits across the Schengen area count towards a combined 90 days in any 180-day period.
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is in use. First registration can involve a photograph and fingerprints, so leave extra time at the border. There is no advance EES application or charge; for Eurostar from London, border checks take place before departure.
For a December 2026 trip, recheck ETIAS before you travel. At our 24 October 2026 check, official guidance had not announced a confirmed launch date and said no application was needed yet. A future requirement cannot be settled by your market booking date.

Germany uses euros (EUR). Check each stall’s payment methods and ask about any reusable-mug deposit. December is CET, one hour ahead of the UK. Layers and waterproof shoes with grip are sensible for outdoor browsing; check the forecast, and carry a suitable European plug adaptor.
A practical UK route is to fly to Berlin and continue by train to Dresden. Deutsche Bahn publishes direct Berlin Hauptbahnhof–Dresden Hauptbahnhof connections; plan the airport-to-station section separately and check your actual December train. You can also build a rail journey via Eurostar to Brussels and onward German connections, allowing generous interchange time.
Whole-journey planning: Fly to Berlin and take an onward train; budget a full travel day and check the dated connections. Substitute your own airport access, check-in allowance, arrival formalities and dated transfer.
