The market

Belfast’s market makes the City Hall gardens feel like a little festive village in the middle of the city. Step away from Donegall Square and the shopping streets for a circuit of wooden chalets, with the civic building giving the stalls a memorable backdrop. It is worth arriving before dusk, taking a first look at the gifts, then staying as the lights on the market and City Hall become the focus. The vintage carousel and giant helter-skelter add another layer to the scene; the latter offers a different view over the city.

The mix of traders is part of Belfast’s character. For 2026 the council says local businesses account for more than half the stalls, alongside international traders, with handcrafted gifts, decorations and artisan products to browse. Food is a reason to linger rather than an afterthought: make time for the outdoor food court, look round before choosing, and plan a proper pause between shopping circuits. The visitor board reported more than 100 chalets in 2025, a useful picture of the scale of recent editions rather than a count for this year.

The Christmas market began in 2004 and has become an established part of Belfast’s festive season. Market Place has operated it since those early years, bringing together a continental-market tradition and local enterprise in the City Hall grounds. That central location makes a relaxed day easy to arrange: browse, eat, enjoy the lights, then return to the surrounding city streets for the rest of your evening. Agree where to meet before anyone heads back for a final purchase. A first circuit can help your group choose a food stop without carrying hot drinks through the busiest shopping space.

    Belfast Grand Central → Bangor

For Friday 27 November 2026, Translink’s published Bangor line timetable lists the last direct Grand Central–Bangor train at 11.55pm, arriving 12.38am on Saturday 28 November. The Friday-only note matters: the Monday–Thursday final service is different. Leave time to reach Grand Central and be on the platform before departure. Published timetable example, checked 23 October 2026. Recheck your exact date with Translink before travelling: engineering work, seasonal services and short-notice changes can override this timetable. No onward connection is assumed.
