How we choose and check our guides

The market

Make Grey’s Monument your meeting point and let Newcastle’s Christmas stalls lead the way. The market spreads into surrounding streets, so you can start with a gentle browse rather than trying to see everything at once. Grey Street, Grainger Street and Nelson Street each belong on the route, while Old Eldon Square adds the separate Christmas Village. Keep room in your bag and in your lunch plans: this is a city outing that lends itself to a few detours.

Give yourself time to discover the street-food line-up. Redhead’s Mac ’N’ Cheese and Acropolis bring familiar North East street-food favourites, while Geordie Banger Co makes a hearty option for a chilly day. There are sweeter stops too, including Crumbling and Made of Crumbs. Take a look at the menus before deciding, and check ingredients with the stallholder if you have dietary requirements. A shared treat can be a reason to slow down between shopping circuits.

Gifts are more than an afterthought. Look for Garry Bell’s North East photography at Elemental Photography, Japanese-inspired jewellery from Konatsu and Jianzhan tea ceramics from Fatfinger Atelier. Wooden games and puzzles from Khaplo and lamps from Luminology add more tempting gift ideas. Browsing these different materials and styles gives the market a satisfying rhythm: something to taste, something to admire and perhaps a present you can finally cross off the list.

Leave time for the city around it. An indoor break makes a pause before another look at the lights. If you want Christmas Village activities, check their own tickets and times separately rather than assuming they come with free market entry. For the journey home, use a dated rail or Metro plan and build in a comfortable margin; an enjoyable final circuit should never depend on catching the very last service.

Practical information

Getting there and back

Use Newcastle Central for mainline rail arrivals and Monument for Metro access near the main meeting point. Check the exact station exit and any lift disruption before travelling. The organiser’s visit page links to parking, Metro and bus information; plan your own dated return rather than assuming the market closing time leaves time for every service.
